The Golden State Warriors hold a valuable NBA Draft lottery pick this season. The Warriors finished with a 15-50 record and were among eight teams not invited to Orlando, Florida for the NBA’s restart.
This season, the Warriors struggled without its top stars Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson who were nursing a fractured wrist and torn ACL respectively. This caused the Warriors to sink to the bottom of the Western Conference standings.
However, both NBA All-Stars are expected to be ready for the 2021 season. The Warriors will also have swingman Andrew Wiggins and NBA star Draymond Green back in the fold next season.
With the nucleus returning, the Warriors could surge back atop the Western Conference. Adding a top NBA Draft prospect could help accelerate the process as well. The Warriors reportedly have interest in both Georgia Bulldogs standout Anthony Edwards and Iowa State guard Tyrese Haliburton.
Green believes the Warriors should look at another prospect. He joined ESPN’s “Jalen and Jacoby” to discuss several topics. He added that he likes the potential of Memphis Tigers center James Wiseman playing with the Warriors.
“I've seen some clips of his workouts and highlights, and he looks to be pretty mobile, a pretty athletic guy,” Green said on the show. “So, with our speed and pace, the way we play, I think he would definitely be a great add if that's case, but I don't really know what pick we're going to get or what pick he's going to go. I'm a living testament to that. You never know how the draft is going to go and how the cards may fall.”
Wiseman played in three games this season. He averaged 19.7 points, 10.7 rebounds and shot 76.9 percent from the field. Defensively, he showcased his rim protection with three blocks for the Tigers.
The talented center, who stands 7-foot and weighs 240 pounds, did not get a chance to finish the season with the Tigers. He was suspended due to an NCAA recruiting infraction. He was suspended 12 games before leaving the basketball program.
NBA scouts have a limited sample of his current skills. There is also high school game film, but it leaves Wiseman a difficult prospect to evaluate.
247Sports Director of Basketball Scouting Jerry Meyer recently took a look at Wiseman and his appeal to NBA teams.
“He can really run; Wiseman seems to be a high-level rim-to-rim runner for a big guy and can go up and get it and finish with authority at the rim,” Meyer said. “He was just more athletic and longer than the opposition. I don’t think he played against the best competition early on, but he was dominant like you would want him to be. To me, that’s his greatest trait: how quickly he can get rim to rim and make an impact from defense to offense.”
The Warriors could use a big man of Wiseman’s skills. He has the ability to thrive in the Warriors perimeter space and pace offense that Green alluded to on Jalen and Jacoby.
But, the question remains whether Wiseman had enough time to adjust to the speed of the elevated basketball play.
“Without a doubt [it’s disappointing],” Meyer said. “I don’t think he was ever put into a position where he had to create his own production. It just seemed like the opposition was generally overwhelmed by Memphis, by his athleticism. When opportunities were created, of course he had the numbers and he was super unstoppable when they could throw it up and he could go get it.
“That’s not say he wouldn’t have had great success,” Meyer said. “But it would have been interesting to see him play against teams that wouldn’t allow him to get out in three-on-twos, two-on-ones. I wanted to see him have to create his own opportunities.”
An NBA team will have to take a chance and help Wiseman develop his elite skills. The Warriors might be a good landing spot given the ability to space the floor. Wiseman could earn a role as a rim protector and finisher.
If so, the Warriors might get back to the NBA playoffs sooner than expected.
