Bill Callahan explains why right tackle Jack Conklin is a 'perfect' system fit for Browns offense - CBS Sports

The offensive line was the area that the Browns needed to improve upon heading into 2020. To the credit of the Cleveland brass, they did just that by inking All-Pro right tackle Jack Conklin to a three-year, $42 million deal in the early stages of free agency, then drafting tackle Jedrick Wills, who they believe can immediately slot in on the blindside, with the No. 10 overall pick.

Specifically speaking on Conklin, newly-hired Browns offensive line guru Bill Callahan explained how the 25-year-old's skill set is perfectly aligned with head coach Kevin Stefanski's outside zone-blocking scheme.

"I really like Jack," Callahan noted during a Thursday video conference. "I watched him coming out of Michigan State. I thought he was outstanding there and what he has done at Tennessee. Early in his career, I know he had some misfortune with injury, but last year, he really came on. He had a really good year.

"You talk about a system fit, you could not get a more perfect tackle in free agency than Jack. He fits the mode for the wide zone game and his pass protection sets, how he short sets and he jumps at the line of scrimmage, which is a tough skill to acquire. Then of course in third down and later downs, you can watch him set vertically and you can see his variance of sets.

"He has the toolbox and he has the skill set to do quite well. What I really like about Jack is he is a player that is really thirsty for new techniques and new ways of doing things. He is wide open from that aspect. I am really looking forward to digging down in the trenches with him and seeing how we can tweak some things and help his game."

After being selected by the Titans with the No. 8 overall selection at the 2016 NFL Draft, Conklin immediately turned himself into an All-Pro player, earning that first-team honor during his rookie season. Knee injuries put a dent into his 2017 postseason and 2018 campaign, but Conklin was able to return and play in all 16 regular-season games for the Titans in 2019 and helped paved the way for a stellar running game by Derrick Henry last postseason.

Now that he's paired himself with a team that schematically is a match made in heaven, Conklin could be in a position to be among the All-Pro selections for 2020 and beyond.
