Tesla President and CEO Elon Musk is eyeing two cities as finalists for the new Tesla Gigafactory: Tulsa, Okla., and Austin, Texas, the Associated Press (AP) reported this weekend.
A source spoke to reporters at AP and confirmed that company executives were shown two potential sites in Tulsa for the factory. It was not clear whether or not other cities were optioned for the new factory.

Tesla currently has a factory in Fremont, Calif., as well as a battery plant in Reno, Nev. The company has an international factory in Shanghai and is constructing one near Berlin.
The forthcoming U.S. Gigafactory would produce the company’s latest electric car model, the Cybertruck, as well as the Tesla Model Y, a small SUV.

Austin, a young tech hub, had been confirmed as a location earlier this year, making Tulsa the newest option. Tulsa Mayor G.T. Bynum (R) tweeted a comment in regards to the news, stating that the city would “buy local” cars if Tulsa sets up shop — in other words, buy Cybertrucks to be used as Tulsa city police cars.
If @Tesla and #Tulsa team up to change the world, it would only be right to #BuyLocal. #cybertruck @elonmusk pic.twitter.com/cQJ5baF1iN

Tesla has reportedly designed police cars before, in locations where they have a factory base, like Fremont. Bynum appears to suggest that the company could do the same for the Tulsa police force.
Still, a decision has not been finalized.
This news comes after Musk announced he would defy Alameda County orders and reopen his Tesla plant in the Bay area. After threatening to move production to a different U.S. location, either Texas or Nevada, the Alameda County Public Health Department permitted the factory to return to operations pending specific health conditions are met.
