Massive fire at historic Singer Sewing Machine factory could continue to burn overnight - NJ.com

The huge fire that struck the historic Singer Sewing Machine factory in Elizabeth on Friday has destroyed three buildings and damaged two others, and was expected to continue burning into the night, city officials said.

“Currently, we are not calling the fire contained, but we are hoping there will be no more extension of the fire,” Elizabeth Mayor Chris Bollwage said at a 3 p.m. news conference.

The DEP posted on X that none of the burning buildings are known to handle hazardous materials. The air is being monitored around the site, and tests “thus far have not shown any elevated levels of concern from smoke,” the agency said.

“There is no threat to the residents or the neighbors in the area,” Bollwage said, adding that water pressure was normal. Elizabeth firefighters will continue to pour water on the blaze likely into Saturday, Bollwage said. Fire companies from all over Union County were standing by to assist, he said.

The roofs of at least three warehouses collapsed during the fire, which was first spotted about 5:30 a.m. by a passing motorist. The complex is located in the 100 block of Trumbull Street, on the banks of the Arthur Kill. Those buildings housed a home goods company, a windshield maker, and a manufacturer of kitchen appliances, the mayor said.

The blaze sent a billowing plume of smoke that could be seen for 30 miles. Sub-freezing temperatures during the early morning hours made for slippery conditions as ice formed on the pavement. One firefighter suffered a minor injury when he slipped on the ice. There were no other injuries, Elizabeth Fire Chief Salvator Barraco said.

Barraco said fire companies arrived to find the buildings engulfed in flames. “There was a bad fire upon arrival,” he said.

It was not immediately clear what started the fire, Barraco said.

Early on, firefighters’ efforts were hampered because the blaze was located in the rear of the complex, away from working fire hydrants. “The fire is in a back building, in an area that’s hard to get to,” said Ruby Contreras, city spokeswoman.

Massive 4-alarm fire burns in Elizabeth industrial park

The 1.4 million-square-foot property houses several business and warehouses. It’s where Singer Sewing Machine Manufacturing Company purchased 32 acres of land in 1873 and established its first factory in the United States.

At the time, the building was the largest workforce plant in the world for a single establishment. Public records show the building sold for $1 million in August 2023.

The fire is less than three miles from Newark Liberty International Airport. A spokeswoman for the Port Authority said earlier Friday flights at the airport and commerce activity at Port Elizabeth had not been affected by the fire.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. School No. 52, which is also on Trumbull Street, was closed Friday due to the fire, officials said.

Smoke was visible for miles as it billowed Friday across Newark Bay, prompting officials in Bayonne to issue an advisory for residents to close windows and limit time outdoors.

Elizabeth residents were earlier in the day advised about low water pressure as more than 100 firefighters converged on the scene to douse the flames, city officials said.
