FWFD battling large fire at former paint factory - 21 Alive News

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - The Fort Wayne Fire Department is responding to a large building fire that started Monday evening.

Fire crews say they were called to the old Valspar paint factory on Jacobs Avenue, near N. Wells Street and W. State Boulevard, around 9:30 p.m.

When they arrived, they said they saw smoke billowing from the second floor and had a hard time getting into the building. They say due to previous fires there, the building had been deemed unsafe for entry, so they tried to get the flames under control from outside.

Crews battled the fire throughout the night and into Tuesday morning.

Around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, the fire rekindled into a massive structure fire that engulfed the building.

Firefighters say the cold hindered their efforts, even causing issues with fire hydrants. FWFD leaders tell us they’ve been battling the fire since Monday night, as it was running into the building’s wooden flooring.

Deputy Chief Adam O’Connor tells 21Alive the vacant building is a popular spot for homeless people to get warm.

However, due to the amount of wood inside the building, O’Connor says it may have caused the fire.

O’Connor adds the building is a total loss.

Ash and debris from the fire was found on the street at Florida Drive and State Boulevard, more than a mile away.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation at this time. Fire crews say they expect to stay on the scene into Tuesday afternoon.
