Could Kim Ng Be a Fit for the Mets? - metsmerizedonline.com

bontereng.blogspot.com

When it was announced Kim Ng, the general manager of the Miami Marlins of the last four years, wouldn’t return to the team for 2024, people began to speculate her next landing spot.

That speaks to her reputation as a general manager, who made moves to help the Marlins reach the playoffs in a full season for the first time since 2003.

It was reported that the Marlins planned to hire a president of baseball operations above Ng—when she and many around baseball believed she earned a promotion (and a raise). Ng, then, declined her mutual team option for 2024 and can now work wherever someone wants her.

Could that be the Mets?

Now, it’s obvious Ng’s preference is for a top front office role. She’s earned that. But as many have discussed, how many of the roles are available? The Boston Red Sox have a lead front office role open, but it seems more people have declined interviews than accepted it. (A stingy owner will do that. The Marlins may run into a similar issue.) It’s no shoo-in she’d get (or want) the job, either. The White Sox promoted an internal candidate for GM.

That’s about it.

So… how about the Mets?

If there aren’t any other attractive jobs, and she still wants to stay in a legit front office role, the Mets’ general manager opening could be a good fit for the short-term until the next interview cycle. A more natural short-term role could also be in an advisory role.

The Mets also have a president of business operations role open, which Ng is qualified for, too, having spent nearly a decade as the vice president of baseball operations (a business-heavy role) for MLB’s corporate office.

It doesn’t hurt that Ng is from Queens, a quality at the forefront of David Stearns’ and Steve Cohen’s introductory press conferences.

But all of this is based on what Ng wants. Does she want to be the lead dog running a team? That’d make a ton of sense given her work in Miami.

Joel Sherman reported that filling a GM spot isn’t a priority for Stearns right now. Finding a manager is much higher on the list, and a search is expected to begin in a couple of weeks, Sherman says. But if a respected baseball mind like Ng shows interest, even in the short term, the experience is valuable and worth a conversation.
