Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian recently joined Shan and RJ on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM]  to discuss how Dallas’ third-round pick DeMarvion Overshown will fit in the Cowboys’ system and the impact of NFL-experienced coaches in the college game.

Here are highlights of his answers, edited for clarity:

DeMarvion Overshown was the third-round pick for the Cowboys, he played different positions for the Longhorns and worked with defensive coordinators but what kind of guy and player are Cowboys fans getting in him?

Steve Sarkisian: Yeah, I think this is an awesome fit for DeMarvion. You know, obviously, I worked for Dan Quinn for two years in Atlanta and I know the premise of that defense and it’s about running and hitting. It’s about having players that are versatile, that can fly to the football, that have a high football IQ, recognizing situations as they come and I think that all those things epitomize DeMarvion. You know, he can run, he will strike you when he gets there. He’s very versatile, obviously a guy who played on the roof when he first got to Texas. Came down, played off the edge in space, we moved him into the box and then we actually put him on the edge and let him rush the passer this past year. So I think there’s a level of versatility there. Really high football IQ guy, I just think it’s an awesome fit, schematically and personality-wise.

How do college coaches such as yourself, Jim Harbaugh and Nick Saban who all have NFL experience help guys who go through the process and are getting drafted to the NFL?

Sarkisian: Well, I do think it’s helpful. I mean, having those connections is important. But I think also, schematically, what we do- the style of play on offensive style of play on defense, how we teach our players- I make it so that it correlates to the NFL. I make the value that we place on special teams. I know myself, Coach Saban at Alabama even makes starters play on special teams, knowing that that’s possibly your avenue to at least get started in the NFL. So I think there’s there’s a lot of things that we try to do and then, obviously, just trying to create that access for the NFL when they come. But you know, it’s pretty amazing to think that when basically the Atlanta Falcons’ entire coaching staff and general manager come and watch us practice spring ball this year, on the same day they’re coming to meet with the Bijan Robinson. So not only are they meeting with Bijan, who they ended up taking with the eighth pick of the draft, but they’re already getting a head start at looking at our players, seeing how they’re coached, the style of schemes we run, so we try to provide that access as well. That, hopefully, in the long run, a year or two from now three from now for some of our young men, that it’ll pay dividends for them.
