Deebo Samuel requests trade; are Patriots a fit for 49ers All-Pro WR? - MassLive.com

Deebo Samuel officially wants to move on from the 49ers.

The jack-of-all-offensive-trades has formally requested a trade, according to ESPN’'s Jeff Darlington. The First-Team All Pro caught 77 passes for 1405 yards last season, rushed for 365, and combined for 14 touchdowns. His 18.2 yards-per-catch average was the best in the league.

“(Samuel) did not want to discuss specific reasons behind his request, but he has indeed let the 49ers know his desire to leave the organization,” Darlington tweeted.

So, might the be a Patriots fit?

That seems highly, highly unlikely for a handful of reasons.

Right off the bat, Samuel reportedly wants to be the highest-paid non-quarterback in football, per Clarence Hill Jr. of the Fort-Worth Star Telegram. That means eclipsing Tyreek Hill’s four-year, $120 million deal. The Patriots currently don’t have enough cap space to sign their 2022 NFL Draft class — another cap-cutting move is
likely coming — per OverTheCap.

Beyond that, it’d take quite a haul for the Patriots to get Samuel’s rights from the 49ers, and consider what Robert Kraft said at the owner’s meetings, perhaps revealing a current organizational philosophy.

“I’m happy that I think we had a great draft last year. It made up for what happened the previous four years or so. I look forward to hopefully having a great draft this year. That’s the only way you can build your team for the long term and consistently that you’ll have a chance of winning, is having a good draft,” Kraft said.

Dealing a bunch of draft picks for a player who is about to get Brinks truck money doesn’t seem in line with that at all.

Finally, Samuel is something of a one-year wonder. His rookie year was solid but not spectacular — 57 catches for 802 yards — and he took a step back in his second season, only suiting up for seven games.

Is that really a resume that warrants more money than Hill?
