Police shoot, kill armed man on FIT campus - Bay News 9

MELBOURNE, Fla. — Melbourne police shot and killed an armed student late Friday at the Florida Institute of Technology.

Authorities said the armed man, later identified as 18-year-old FIT student Alhaji M. Sow of Riverdale, Ga., confronted students and law enforcement.

According to police, officers responded to campus just before 11 p.m. to reports of a man that was armed with a knife and had chased students into a building.

Police and FIT security entered the building and confronted Sow, who they said lunged at them.

Authorities opened fired, killing Sow. 

A Melbourne police officer was injured during the confrontation but is expected to recover.

The FIT campus was under lockdown during the situation.

There were no other injuries.

An investigation is ongoing.
