Auburn transfer Bo Nix just announced he was transferring to Oregon football. How good of a fit is he with the Ducks for 2022?
When Bo Nix committed to Auburn a few years ago, there was plenty of hope that the Pinson, Ala., native would be a superstar with the Tigers. He had an up-and-down career and decided to transfer following his junior year which featured his second head coach and yet another offensive coordinator. His next program choice? Oregon football.
It’s only fitting that Oregon would be his school of choice as he had his first-ever collegiate game against the Ducks and now he’s going to end his college career in Eugene.
Against Oregon in his first-ever college football game, Nix led a comeback to beat the Ducks, passing for 177 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for another 42 yards on the biggest stage. It seemed like his career was about to take off.
Fast forward to 2021 and Nix has been a mixed bag but you could argue that his junior year was his best yet. He finished with 2,294 yards and 11 touchdowns with just three picks and a career-best 61 percent completion rate. He didn’t run as much, totaling 168 yards on the ground with four scores and he did all of this while missing the final two games of the season.
Nix is an athletic quarterback who slowly got better but still had a mixed bag of a career but he reminds me a little of Anthony Brown.
And that may not be the best news for Oregon fans.
How should Oregon football fans feel about Nix?
I’ll be honest, I don’t like this fit a ton. Oregon just had a mobile quarterback who wasn’t the most accurate this past season in Brown and Nix is a very similar quarterback.
In fact, Brown has a career 58 percent completion rate, 7.2 yards per attempt, 2.19 touchdown-to-interception ratio, and a passer rating of 131.5. On the flip side, Nix has a career 59 percent completion rate, 6.9 yards per attempt, 2.4 touchdown-to-interception ratio, and a passer rating of 125. And they’re both similar in size at 6-foot-3 and there are about 10 pounds separating the two.
Yeah, this isn’t the best-case scenario for Oregon fans because Brown had a somewhat forgettable finish to his senior season — although there’s an Alamo Bowl to salvage that.
Nix is an experienced quarterback who’s only going to boost the position as a whole and will push Ty Thompson to be better, but I don’t think he should be a lock to start in 2022.
Dan Lanning is going to have quite the competition on his hands and if he beats out Thompson, he deserves a shot.
