ESTERO, Fla. – Estero alumnus Josh Winckowski always wanted to play in the big leagues, regardless of what team he was on.
“Obviously when we moved to Fort Myers a long time ago we always joked that it would be funny if I played for the Red Sox or Twins, but the odds weren’t great for it,” remembers Winckowski.
But Winckoski’s odds began to change just a few weeks ago when the Toronto Blue Jays, who drafted the righty out of Estero High School in 2016, traded him to the New York Mets.
Winckowski said that trade was “really surprising” after he had been with the Blue Jays for the last four years.
But the former Estero Wildcat wouldn’t be a member of the Mets for long because days after the team acquired him, Winckowski was traded again, this time to the Boston Red Sox.
“Being a Met for a week and a half was really surprising,” he said.
“It was definitely an odd few weeks.”
Oddly enough, that final trade brought Winckowski home for the spring.
“Any time you join a new team it is nerve racking. But I think being at home kind of helps that process,” Winckowski said.
Just a short drive from where Winckowski played his high school ball, the right handed pitcher is now looking to make the most of his opportunity with the Red Sox, even if other teams didn’t want to give him one.
“There’s two sides of it,” he said. “The Red Sox wanted me and the Mets didn’t really care enough to have me, and the same with the Jays. I’ve always had a chip on my shoulder but it’s definitely a little bit larger this year.”
