MUSKEGON, MI - Many local restaurants were hit hard by the Michigan’s coronavirus shutdown orders, and still struggle to pick up their usual summer momentum.
Not so at the Coffee Factory, located inside the Watermark Center, formerly the Shaw-Walker factory, at 1402 Hudson St., according to Watermark’s president, Sarah Sass.
“We’ve been so busy that we added another employee,” she told MLive. “Its just been unreal to see the response.”
In addition to coffee, the cafe is known for baked goods, like scones and muffins, and lunch offerings, like salads, sandwiches and quiches.
It’s also an option for people with food restrictions: the menu always has a few vegan and gluten-free options.
Although restrictions on indoor dining lightened in early June, the Coffee Factory “took our time reopening,” Sass said. When their doors officially opened on June 29, the space had been rearranged, with expanded outdoor seating.
There is also a new in-house “office” area, named for a regular customer who studied for - and subsequently passed - the bar exam from inside the cafe.
That kind of celebration of the community extends to the menu, too. The coffee beans come from Grand Rapids-based Madcap Coffee, and much of the produce is from west Michigan farms, too.
One menu item comes from even closer by. It’s a partnership with the McLaughlin Grows Urban Farm, 175 E Larch Ave., featuring all produce from that garden, in support of the teen program that helps it grow.
The McLaughlin Grows Power Salad is on offer through the end of the month. Other items rotate frequently, and are shared on the cafe’s Facebook page.
The Coffee Factory is open Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., at 1402 Hudson Street, Muskegon. To place a curbside order or ask questions, call 231-747-9896.
