It’s officially May, which means we can now start to think of summer, and beach time.
Yes, I know we’re all dealing with stay at home orders, so we can’t actually visit the beach, and it might snow tomorrow. But that’s Michigan, right?. Eventually we’ll be able to visit our favorite Michigan beaches.
With that in mind, our pick for Beer of the Week has us watching our waistlines.
We have selected Cheboygan Brewing Company’s newly released Tree Love, a low-calorie IPA that comes in at only 115 calories.
Even though my Michigan’s Best co-worker and friend Amy Sherman is off this week, she did pick out the beer, and she lined up an interview with our longtime friend, Phil Davey, who is a rep for Cheboygan Brewing Company.
Phil shipped me Tree Love so we could sample it as part of Beer of the Week on our Michigan’s Best Facebook page.
If you get a chance, watch the video. You’ll learn a little bit about the brewery’s history, which dates back to the late 1800s, and you’ll learn about those popular flagship beers like Blood Orange Honey wheat ale and Lighthouse Amber, which they are still distributing throughout the state.
Make sure to join his live trivia show at 4 p.m. on Thursdays on the Cheboygan Brewing Company’s Facebook page. They’re a lot of fun.
Beer of the Week - May 1, 2020
Cheboygan Brewing Company, Cheboygan, Michigan
Tree Love IPA (3.8% ABV, 40 IBU)
Phil said with the trend of hard seltzers and lighter, easy-drinking beers, they started working on this beer more than a year ago. It’s made with single hop, Michigan Copper Hops. He called the beer extremely “crushable.” On the nose you get “big tropical notes,” including pineapple, papaya and mango. He said it’s not a tropical bomb, but just a hint. “It smells like it’s going to be sweet, but is not. The bitterness (of the hops) comes through.”
I picked up tons of citrus notes on the aroma, but agreed that bitter taste on the finish really smooths out. It’s an easy-drinking beer, for sure. It’s a good one for those who want to check out craft beer, but don’t want to give up on the domestics.
Oh, and it’s going to help you if you’re counting calories.
“Tree Love” name
Phil said it comes from a disc golf or golf reference, where you hit ball or the disc into a tree and it bounces toward the hole or basket. “It represents the fact the tree loves you and wants your disc or ball to go into the basket.” Phil said there a couple Easter eggs on the can to the left and right of the label. A flag is on the left and a disc basket on the right.
Thanks again, Phil for being on the show this week, to Amy for setting it up!
