Veteran outfielder is good fit for Yankees but might cost too much - NJ.com

How much is too much?

That’s what New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has to decide when it comes to shopping for a new left fielder.

The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports Jurickson Profar “perhaps the best remaining free-agent position player, is a better fit for a team with a more pressing need in left field — the Yankees, for example, or the Rangers. But after turning down a $7.5 million player option with the Padres, he almost certainly wants a multi-year deal with at least that average annual value. The Yankees have luxury-tax concerns, and the Rangers’ estimated $196 million Opening Day payroll would be a club record by about $30 million.”

Per SNY, MLB.com’s Jon Morosi reported last week “the Yankees are reportedly among a group of teams ‘keeping tabs on’ free agent outfielder Jurickson Profar.”

Morosi mentions the Miami Marlins and Texas Rangers as two other teams who are in the mix for the versatile outfielder. He says based on where the market is right now, a shorter-term high-AAV deal would make the most sense for Profar.

New York Post’s Jon Heyman reported last week “The Yankees have discussed signing free agent Jurickson Profar. But the Yankees are adamant (at least for now) about staying under the “Steve Cohen tax” threshold of $293 million. They are at about $290M. They, too, checked in on Josh Harrison.”

MLB Trade Rumors reported last week “The club’s luxury tax number is right up against the $293MM line that marks the highest tier of CBT penalization. Roster Resource projects the organization at $292.3MM at present. ... Considering where their payroll stands, rigidly sticking to that goal would rule out any other notable addition unless the club finds a way to shed some money.”

The 29-year-old Profar spent the last three seasons with the Padres. He played in a career-high 152 game in 2022, hitting .243 with 15 home runs and 58 RBI.

Profar previously played for the Rangers and Oakland A’s. The nine-year MLB veteran is a jack-of-all-trades, with experience at all three outfield positions, as well as all four infield positions.

New York is staring at a hole in left field with Andrew Benintendi signing a five-year, $75 million contract with the Chicago White Sox.

Yankees’ in-house candidates for left field include Aaron Hicks and Oswaldo Cabrera. Cashman also recently signed Billy McKinney, Willie Calhoun and Rafael Ortega as outfield depth.
