Bill O’Brien’s ‘teapot’ temper makes him a good fit for Patriots QB Mac Jones - MassLive.com

Mac Jones wasn’t happy. Everyone saw the frustration boil over.

In the middle of the Patriots 24-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills, the Patriots quarterback blew his top on the sideline. The video clip went viral as Jones shouted, “Throw the (expletive) ball! (Expletive) quick game sucks!”

Jones later explained he let his emotions get the best of him as he tried to jumpstart his struggling offensive unit. However, it wasn’t the only time he was caught dropping expletives on the field.

In the next week, against Arizona, the Patriots were called for multiple delay of game penalties. After the second one, Jones walked off the field and let out a very clear F-bomb for everyone watching to hear. On that same drive, following a throwaway, the cameras caught Jones saying, “What the (expletive) before clapping his hands and shouting “come on” multiple times.

There were times during the 2022 season that Jones was like a teapot – his temper would rise (or boil) before erupting. That’s why it’s fitting that Bill O’Brien could be Jones’ next offensive coordinator. The former Patriots offensive coordinator interviewed with the team on Thursday and is viewed as the favorite.

When O’Brien was first in New England, Tom Brady and Brian Hoyer gave him the nickname “teapot” due to his temper.

In 2011, people got a glimpse when O’Brien and Brady screamed at each other on the sideline. Four years later, when he was the head coach of the Houston Texans, Hoyer told the story of how O’Brien earned his nickname.

During the 2015 season, Hoyer told Houston reporters that O’Brien had a temper that boiled over from time-to-time in Foxborough. For that reason, Hoyer bought an actual teapot. From then on, he and Brady would write stories on the teapot about O’Brien anytime he lost his cool.

“Basically, any time we felt it was justified, we’d put it on the teapot like it was the Stanley Cup,” Hoyer said. “I brought a teapot in one day. Tom and I thought it would be funny to just keep adding to the story. At a certain point, I started writing them down in my notebook. Finally, when we brought the teapot in, we started wrapping them around and eventually it was pretty full.”

O’Brien joined the Patriots in 2007. He became the quarterbacks coach in 2009 and started calling plays that season when Josh McDaniels left for Denver. He earned the ‘official’ offensive coordinator title in 2011. That’s when his most famous ‘teapot moment’ was seen.

During the Patriots win over Washington, Brady was intercepted when trying to connect with receiver Tiquan Underwood. On the sideline, Brady started to yell at his receiver. That’s when O’Brien stepped in. The cameras caught Brady and the offensive coordinator screaming at each other. Hoyer and then-receivers coach Chad O’Shea stepped in between the pair.

Hoyer called that the “ultimate” teapot moment, but did say that he added Brady to the teapot for the outburst as well.

In 2017, during an interview with WEEI’s Kirk & Callahan Show, Brady said he deserved to be yelled at and praised O’Brien for his coaching style. “He kind of let me have it. I deserved it,” Brady said. “It was kind of a dumb throw. I deserved it. I kind of chirped back, and he didn’t like it. I was kind of fiery at the time, too.

“We cooled off pretty quick. That’s Billy’s style. Billy’s gonna let you know if he doesn’t like something that you did. He handles it in the right way, in a way that you really respected. You know he’s fiery, you know he just wants to get the job done.”

That brings us back to Jones and the 2023 Patriots. O’Brien’s viewed as the favorite to land the Patriots offensive coordinator job for some obvious reasons – he’s coached the Patriots offense, the Alabama offense and he’s met Jones before. However, O’Brien’s passionate and fiery temperament also factors in.

Jones was clearly frustrated last season as the Patriots offense took a step backward. After he was caught swearing on the sideline during the Buffalo loss, Jones said, “I want to be coached harder.”

He’ll get that if O’Brien is hired. He’ll also get a coach who isn’t afraid to scream back. That was something that the greatest quarterback of all-time appreciated.

“He’s an incredible coach. I know the guys play so hard for him because he just – you guys know – Billy is a straight shooter,” Brady said in 2017. “Sometimes you might not always like what he says, but you respect it because his goal is the same thing that yours is, to get the best out of the team. I really enjoyed my time with him.”
