Top-150 national recruit Trey Pettigrew was intrigued when Nevada started recruited him, but it wasn't until he took an official visit to campus two weeks ago that he knew he wanted to suit up in Wolf Pack silver and blue.
"I fell in love with the coaching staff there, and this is a great group of guys," Pettigrew said on Friday's NSN Daily about his decision to commit to Nevada. "I just felt like it was the right place. I feel very comfortable."
Pettigrew, a 6-foot-3, 175-pound guard from the Chicago area, said being able to see Nevada practice in person made him feel like he wanted to be a part of the program. He felt he would best develop under head coach Steve Alford and his lead assistant, Craig Neal.
"Getting a chance to sit there and watch the whole thing, I got to see a lot of great things," Pettigrew said of Wolf Pack practice. "Very high energy. The guys work real hard, and I think Coach Alford put them through great drills. I got a chance to watch Coach Neal run the offense, and it was just something I wanted to be a part of. I saw it right away, and I fell in love with it."
Pettigrew is a consensus three-star recruit rated by 247Sports as the No. 144 prospect in the 2022 class. Rivals lists him at the No. 127 prospect in his class. A combo guard, Pettigrew is capable of making plays for others as well as getting his own. He's an above-average 3-point shooter who has tallied around 15 points per game in high school, which he's split between Chicago and Phoenix. Pettigrew played his first two seasons of high school in Illinois before moving to Arizona last year. He's back in the Midwest this season and will play for Chicago's Kenwood Academy.
"I've been all over just trying to find the right fit for me and then getting the right competition, being the best I can, trying to put myself in different situations to just be me and keep getting my name out," Pettigrew said. "It's helped a lot. I've seen a lot of new faces. I've played with a lot of people, so I think it's strengthened my leadership skills a ton, and then I just got a chance to play really good competition in the process."
Pettigrew said he's a versatile offensive player who could fill a number of roles. Next season, he would join a Wolf Pack team projected to lose starting shooting guard Desmond Cambridge Jr. as well as potentially losing star point guard Grant Sherfield, who is only a junior but the preseason Mountain West player of the year and could make a push toward the NBA.
"I feel I can do a little bit of everything," Pettigrew said. "I can play defense real well, rebound and then obviously score the basketball. But I like getting everybody involved. One thing I really try to focus on is about leadership skills before I get to that level because that's very, very important."
Pettigrew could be Sherfield's heir apparent, spending a season as his understudy before taking over as the Wolf Pack's point guard. Pettigrew said he's looking forward to being Sherfield's teammate and learning from him.
"He's a great point guard," Pettigrew said. "I like watching his game a lot. He's just a floor general. That in itself is amazing. He's a very good leader. I watch him as much as I can. I watched the last game he played, and then as soon as I got out to Nevada, I met with him and we've been building a great relationship."
During the summer, Pettigrew was offered a chance to play in the Overtime Elite pro league next season, an organization that offers a six-figure salary, but Pettigrew said is was important to him to get that college experience, which will come at Nevada.
"The college experience only comes around once," Pettigrew said. "Getting to play that is a whole different thing in itself. I think it was a great opportunity, something new, definitely something to watch down the road. But I didn't see myself playing in that. I wanted to do college. This is something I've been looking forward to for a really long time. There's things you'll miss out on, like the (NCAA) Tournament and stuff that you could possibly play in in college, so that was really important."
