Lupe, a Plott Hound-Dachshund mix, poses in front of the future home of Nestlé Purina PetCare’s 23rd U.S. manufacturing facility, slated to begin operating in Williamsburg Township, Ohio in 2023.

Less than a month after announcing it will spend $450 million for a new factory in North Carolina, Nestlé Purina PetCare has announced an even bigger investment for a factory in Ohio.

Driven by higher demand for its pet foods, Purina said October 26 that it will put $550 million toward building a massive 1.2 million-square-foot factory in Williamsburg Township in the southwest corner of the state. The facility will produce dry dog and cat food under brands that include Purina Pure Plan, Purina ONE, and Dog Chow.

Anticipated to become operational in 2023, the factory is expected to employ more than 300 people by 2024. Positions will include professional staff, production operators, technical staff, and engineers. Construction is slated to begin later this fall.

The plant will join Purina’s 21 existing production locations, along with the new factory in Eden, North Carolina, that the company announced in late September and is expected to open in 2022.

Purina said the new Ohio factory will be the company’s most technologically advanced yet, utilizing robotics and digital tools. It will feature a training center for promoting learning and development. Like with the planned Eden plant, Purina’s Ohio plant will emphasize zero waste disposal, with production processes designed to recycle heat and water. The St. Louis, Missouri-based company said it aims to make the new facility 100% powered by renewable sources as soon as possible.

Nestlé Purina PetCare is the world’s second-largest pet food maker, with $13.2 billion in 2018 sales. Mars Petcare is number one at $18.1 billion.
