A “fit and healthy” teenage wrestler in England has died within hours of being hospitalized with COVID-19.
Cameron Wellington, a 19-year-old professional wrestler from Walsall, tested positive for the virus on Nov. 10, but his condition quickly took a turn for the worse, Birmingham Mail reported.
“Cam was adamant he was fine but I could tell (something was wrong). The color was draining from him,” his mother Jane Wellington told the outlet.
He was rushed to the hospital Wednesday with breathing problems — and doctors said he “wasn’t expected to last an hour.”
Surgeons operated on his lungs before he was transferred to another hospital, the outlet reported. He underwent another procedure for his heart Thursday but died shortly after the operation.
“We as a family are totally heartbroken and yet immensely proud of him. He put up a massive fight,” his mom said.
She said the family is now urging others to “take the virus seriously.”
“The whole situation has come as a massive shock to us. Cam was overweight but he was fit and otherwise healthy,” his mother said.
