Even with the NBA’s 2020-21 season not starting until Christmas, there isn’t that much time for teams to explore their options in free agency.
Which means some players, like the Mavs' Tim Hardaway Jr., likely won’t be jumping at the opportunity to test free agency unless they have to or know there is a strong market for them. Hardaway Jr. has a player option for the 2020 season.
Speaking on the Go4it podcast, hosted by ESPN’s Paul Gant, Tim Hardaway Sr. not only thinks his son should stay in Dallas for the 2020-21 season, but hopes he can get a long-term deal.
“We want to sign back with them(Mavericks), no question,” Hardaway Sr. said. “We want to sign back with them (on a) long-term deal, no question. I think he is a great third option on that team. He showed his leadership. He showed that he can play with Luka [Doncic] and [Kristaps] Porzingis. When one of them goes down, he’s been right there for the team and rose up for the team.”
Hardaway Jr. finished the season as Dallas' third leading scorer with 15.8 points per game and was shooting .389 from 3-point range.
He also notes that the still unknown financial ramifications of COCID-19 on the the NBA’s revenue could influence team’s spending during the upcoming offseason.
"I think everybody right now it keeping a lot of things [close] to the vest, " he said. “I don’t think a lot of money is going to be moved or that a lot of money is going to be spent on free agency this offseason. So we’ll probably have to wait until next summer or the next offseason [to test out free agency]. If you are a free agent this year... I don’t even know if those people are going to get the money that they deserve or that they want. So good thin [Hardaway Jr.] has a player option"
