A suburban Detroit automotive supplier recently announced plans to establish a sixth U.S. facility in Northwest Alabama.

Dura Automotive Systems plans to produce battery trays for electric vehicles at the new factory in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, state officials said in a release.

Dura, which produces mechatronic systems, electronics, structural systems, and exterior components for leading automakers, plans to spend $59 million to equip an existing, city-owned building on the Shoals Research Airpark campus. The company will also partner with the Shoals Economic Development Authority on an $11.5 million expansion of the facility.

The project is expected to create 279 new jobs.

“This investment represents Dura’s commitment to support global customers in the transition to electrified, high-performance vehicles,” Dura CEO Kimberly Rodriguez said in the statement.

In addition to its Auburn Hills headquarters and a factory in Fremont, Mich., Dura operates additional sites in Missouri and Tennessee. The company includes 31 facilities in 13 countries and a total workforce of about 6,700. Rodriguez was named CEO earlier this month after Dura was acquired by Lexington, Kentucky, private equity firm MiddleGround Capital, and emerged from a global restructuring.

Alabama officials said the announcement would bolster its already growing auto supplier segment — particularly as U.S. automakers increase their production of electric vehicles.

“Our auto industry is focused on the future and will continue to adapt to meet all challenges,” said state Commerce Secretary Greg Canfield.
