Coronavirus: Remington offers idled Upstate New York arms factory for medical device manufacturing - syracuse.com

ILION, N.Y. -- Remington Arms is offering to make its huge gun factory in Ilion available to manufacture ventilators, surgical masks and other medical devices needed in the fight against the coronavirus outbreak.

Remington CEO Ken D’Arcy made the offer in letters Monday to Gov. Andrew Cuomo and President Donald Trump.

“We would be honored to donate our facility to the production of ventilators, surgical masks, hospital beds or any other products mission-critical to the war on coronavirus,” D’Arcy said in the letter to Trump. “These products as you know are essential to winning this new kind of war and Remington stands ready to enlist in wartime production.”

The 1-million-square-foot factory in Ilion was forced to close this week under Cuomo’s order requiring all businesses except those in essential industries, like medical device manufacturing, to send their workers home to slow the spread of the highly contagious novel coronavirus and COVID-19, the sometimes deadly respiratory disease it causes.

The shutdown idled 800 Remington workers, most of whom are members of the United Mine Workers. Remington has been making arms at the factory for more than 200 years.

“Remington products have served in every major U.S. military conflict since 1816,” D’Arcy said. “We are prepared for duty yet again and would be honored to work with you to fight the war against the coronavirus.”
