The construction and operation of a box factory, planning mill and lumber working industry has been assured to Corning by the joint action of the Corning chamber of commerce and citizens.
Last night the directors of the chamber met and heard the report of their committee having the matter in charge. At this meeting were the members of the proposed factory company. The committee, composed of Messrs. E. A. Shook, C. D. Hill and W. N. Woodson, reported that a site could be secured and that the money for construction could be obtained. It was then decided that a holding committee, composed of these same three men, acquire title to the site, secure the money for construction and enter a contract with the company to deliver to them the site, building, etc., at the end of a period of five years upon payment of the purchase price, plus 6 percent interest, the amount to be returned to the subscribers to the fund as their subscription shows.
Through the efforts of their attorney, L. W. Hughes, the Corning box company has been incorporated, and the papers will be filed within the next few days.
The incorporators, with capital stock of $50,000, are Messrs. Alfred H. Osborn, Albert D. Osborn, Alfred S. Osborn, S. M. Taylor, John H. Hamilton and H. V. Tartar, with Titus and Webster of Stockton as selling agents.
The site for the box factory has been secured from W. N. Woodson and comprises lots 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 in block 3, south side addition to Corning, and contains two and one-half acres. It lies just south of Fig Lane, along the west side of the Southern Pacific right of way.
Spur tracks will be built, as well as lumber sheds, factory building and other needed buildings, and machinery of the latest pattern will be installed, and all in time to handle this summer’s cut of timber in the mountains west of Corning.
