A rough season on the court for the Houston Rockets has led to pointed criticism from multiple members of the national media, with ESPN's Brian Windhorst becoming the latest notable figure to provide his thoughts on a team that enters Friday night with the worst record in the NBA.
Windhorst—who recently traveled to France to profile Victor Wembanyama, the projected top pick in this year's draft—didn't hold back this week when discussing the Rockets as a potential destination for the French phenom.
"I think Houston is a dangerous fit for anybody, because that team is out of control," Windhorst said during an appearance on The Tony Kornheiser Show. "They have have completely destroyed and broken down [head coach] Stephen Silas, who is a good man but cannot handle the renegade operation that has become. Pretty much everything the Rockets do is a mess right now, so if I were Victor, I would be a little bit worried about Houston."
Windhorst did note that Wembanyama "was very clear" when speaking with him that "it didn't matter" which NBA team drafts him, though additional comments spur curiosity about how he would fit into the Rockets' plans. Windhorst said Wembanyama "is going to want the situation to be completely constructed around him" when he gets drafted, which could pose problems with Houston's current rebuilding process.

The Rockets are currently built around second-year guard Jalen Green, the No. 2 pick in the 2021 draft, and they added Jabari Smith Jr. to the mix with the third overall selection last year. That said, Wembanyama appears to have the makings of a generational talent, standing 7-foot-4 with the ball handling and shooting abilities of a perimeter player.
There's also a significant possibility the Rockets won't have the option to draft Wembanyama in the first place. Even if they secure the worst record in the NBA, they'll only have a 14 percent chance of landing the top pick.
