When you drive by Fifth Bend Farm, you’ll see a new, small stand by the road. Surrounded by green space, a barn, chickens and fresh crops, it offers a wide variety of produce and fresh eggs, including tomatoes, potatoes, peppers and turnips.
Their sign notes that customers have the option to shop by the honor system. It adds that shoppers can select the products they want, calculate their balance and then choose a payment method.
Fifth Bend Farm opened approximately two and a half months ago when co-founders Nura and Jacob Hill were inspired to create a sustainable and equitable food stand.
According to Hill, people who visit the stand are trustworthy and supportive of the stand’s ‘pay as you see fit’ practice. He noted in addition to produce, they offer coffee, pancake mix and more for those who visit the stand. He said while much of the produce is popular, they donate a fair amount of leftover food so it doesn’t go to waste.
“We end up giving a lot of food away,” Hill said. “We end up doing a lot of experimentation with produce. And sometimes, there are things that people aren’t used to eating, so they go really fast or sometimes they don’t go at all.”
Hill mentioned their business makes an effort to create as little food waste as possible. He also noted that the stand deeply values paying their workers a living wage, as well as the prioritization of sustainability.
“We practice regenerative agriculture, so we want to rebuild the soil as we’re growing. So we really don’t have any input besides worm compost or castings, chicken manure, very natural things like that.” Hill said. “And no sprays for net control — we’re using insect netting when we can to cut a physical barrier around the plants to keep insects off and trying to practice crop rotation and things like that when we can.”
Hill added the stand is convenient for grocery needs and conservation because seasonal grocery is offered without extra packaging.
Nura Hill said that other farms in the Triangle area follow Fifth Bend Farm’s pay as you see fit model. She also noted that the farm has over one hundred chickens which they sell fresh eggs from.
“This has been such a fun endeavor to go through this process and see the people that come by,” Hill said. “You can see that there is a need for that — just to have a local place where you can stop by and get local veggies with no chemicals.”
The partners plan to continue expansion of the stand in the upcoming year.
Fifth Bend Farm is open from sunrise to sunset and is located on 1733 Mount Carmel Church Road.
