Ben Simmons news is dominating the NBA headlines, but it isn’t really reaching Boston Celtics circles.
Brad Stevens has been an active President of Basketball Operations, aggressively maneuvering his way out of Kemba Walker’s contract, sending multiple players he traded for back out, and even using draft picks to get off of some smaller contracts at the end of the roster.
That said, bringing on Simmons would be an undertaking that could undo all of the progress made this offseason.
The Sixer Sense’s Lucas Johnson agrees, citing the lack of offensive cohesion that would likely result in a Simmons-Celtics union:
With two high usage wins in Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, the Boston Celtics won’t be a good fit with Simmons. He’d have to move without the ball on offense in the half-court, which he has shown he’s unwilling to do so. The fit there is on defense, but Simmons won’t be able to maximize his abilities on offense.
In ranking the top destinations for Simmons, the Cs came in at #13 on The Sixer Sense’s list. They rank above most suitors because of the number of assets they have even after being one of the more active participants in the trade market this offseason.
Johnson sees the Minnesota Timberwolves, Golden State Warriors, and Sacramento Kings as the most sensible suitors.
The Wolves could use a guy like Simmons to prop up the scorers (Karl-Anthony Towns, D’Angelo Russell, Anthony Edwards) on their roster and defend the best perimeter player on opposing teams.
Golden State, as Johnson notes, are almost perfect, but Draymond Green’s clunky potential fit with Simmons may take the Dubs out of the running.
Sacramento was a serious suitor in recent days, but they ultimately wouldn’t part with De’Aaron Fox or Tyrese Haliburton.
Whatever resolution the Simmons saga ends up with, don’t expect the Boston Celtics to be the team to land him.
