There weren’t many NBA teams with ample salary cap space entering the 2021 offseason, which meant some players were bound to be left on the outside looking in. Dennis Schroder ended up being one of those free agents, and the Boston Celtics ultimately became the beneficiary.
On Tuesday, the Celtics agreed to a one-year contract with Schroder at the $5.9 million taxpayer mid-level exception, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Schroder confirmed Wojnarowski’s report on his Instagram account with the following caption:
“I’m proud to announce that for the 2021-22 season I’ll be playing with the Boston Celtics! This is one of the best franchises in NBA history and it will be a honour to put on the green and white and do what I love! I’m going out there every night and leaving it all on the floor for the city!! Who’s ready!?”
Getting Schroder at $5.9 million is a great acquisition for Boston at tremendous value. As the market shaped up, teams with salary cap space rapidly began to shrink, meaning there were few potential suitors left for Schroder. The 27-year-old point guard essentially is betting on himself with this short-term contract, as he’ll look to get a payday next offseason after ideally showcasing his skill set in 2021-22. The Celtics give Schroder the chance to prove himself in a solid system this season, which was likely the most appealing short-term option for him at this stage of his career.
Boston’s front office will welcome this addition with open arms. The Celtics had little guard depth entering this season, and Schroder immediately helps to fill that void. The signing also aligns with the organization’s long-term plans. Brad Stevens, Boston’s president of basketball operations, has focused on maintaining financial flexibility through this season ahead of next summer. That involves plenty of short-term contracts, so this Schroder scenario was perfect for the front office’s emphasis on financial wiggle room. If the Celtics had signed Schroder for the full mid-level exemption, they would have been hard-capped at $143 million. Instead, they’ll reap the benefits of getting Schroder at the taxpayer mid-level of $5.9 million.
In other words, this deal works for both sides. Schroder lands in a good spot where he’ll see the court plenty, giving himself the opportunity to prove himself ahead of next offseason. Boston, on the other hand, gets some much-needed reinforcement for its backcourt while maintaining financial flexibility heading into the summer of 2022.
How head coach Ime Udoka plans to use Schroder remains to be seen. He arguably is Boston’s third-best scoring option behind Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, although Udoka told reporters Tuesday that he plans to put the ball in Marcus Smart’s hands “a lot more” this season. Smart certainly could serve as a facilitator alongside Schroder at times, but Schroder coming off the bench as a scoring option would be a nice luxury for Udoka.
Time will tell how Boston plans to fit Schroder into its rotation, but regardless, getting him for $5.9 million is undeniably fantastic value. The Celtics should be thrilled with their newest addition.
