Penn State enters August camp with one of the deepest running back depth charts in the nation.
Keyvone Lee, a second-year player from Florida, led the Nittany Lions in rushing a year ago with 438 yards and four scores.
Noah Cain, who flashed big-time skill during his freshman season of 2019, is healthy again after missing all but one quarter of 2020 with a lower-leg injury.
Devyn Ford, another third-year player, has game-changing speed and is one of the team’s most dangerous players in space.
The Lions added John Lovett via the transfer portal in the offseason. The 210-pound Lovett totaled 16 touchdowns between 2017 and 2019 at Baylor.
So where does that leave Lee’s classmate, Caziah Holmes? The 5-11, 209-pounder is another Penn State player who may be flying under the radar for 2021.
Holmes, a four-star recruit from Florida like Lee, appeared in all nine games last season and had his moments in a couple of games.
Holmes racked up 50 rushing yards in Penn State’s loss at Nebraska, running through the Cornhuskers’ defense for 36 yards on one attempt.
His top effort occurred in Penn State’s season-ending victory over Illinois at Beaver Stadium. Holmes totaled 96 all-purpose yards, including 77 rushing yards and two touchdowns on only 12 carries.
Holmes displayed power and speed at times a year ago. He also caught six passes for 37 yards. And while Penn State’s running back room is loaded with talent, Holmes can be a difference-maker if given the chance.
