Procter & Gamble has sold a dish detergent factory in Kansas City, Kansas for an undisclosed sum.
The Cincinnati-based consumer products giant, however, has leased back the property from the new owner for at least the rest of 2020. The transaction is part of a previously disclosed plan to shut down the 1905 facility as P&>'s newest U.S. factory in West Virginia ramps up operations.
The large factory in West Virginia is 2 million square feet or twice the size of the Kenwood Towne Centre. It produces fabric enhancer sheets for Bounce, Swiffer products, dishwashing liquids, such as Dawn, and shampoos, such as Pantene. The plant employs 1350 employees and is still hiring.
The plant employs 200 workers and makes Dawn, Gain, Ivory and Joy hand dishwashing detergents. The company says it has worked with its employees on transitioning to other facilities at P&> or finding jobs elsewhere.
In 2018, P&> announced it would shutter the Kansas City factory and cut back operations in Iowa City, Iowa, where it runs two factories. Company officials say their timetable for closing the Kansas City plant is on track for later this year and hasn't been affected by the new coronavirus pandemic.
At other plants in the U.S. and around the world, P&> has added the production of hand sanitizers and masks to fight the outbreak. The company has mostly declined to disclose which of its 24 U.S. plants and 85 overseas factories are making personal protective equipment or supplies, but it has acknowledged its laundry detergent factory in Lima, Ohio is making hand sanitizers.
