Tervis Tumbler Co., one of Sarasota County’s largest manufacturing employers, has temporarily shut down its facility in Venice, the latest local business to cut back during the coronavirus crisis.

The family owned maker of insulated drinkware said it was decided to close its plant after the “safe at home” order was issued last week by Gov. Ron DeSantis.

“After reviewing, the best decision for Tervis, our employees and our communities is to shut down our Venice facility now through May 1st,” president Rogan Donelly stated on the company web site. “We will be keeping our retail locations closed during this time frame as well.”

The company, which most recently reported about 700 employees, last month closed its 40 retail stores through at least the end of April.

Donelly said full-time employees who work in office, production and retail will receive full pay and health benefits during the shut down.

The Tervis.com site remains open to accept orders and provide customer service. The operations facility is closed and expected to reopen May 4, and any orders that had not shipped as of last Thursday will not ship until the facility reopens.

The 74-year-old company sells its products through national retailers, its stores and on its website. It has licensing agreements with universities, sports leagues and national brands.

Manufacturing is expected to be one of the hardest hit sectors during the economic downturn tied to the coronavirus pandemic. Nationwide, manufacturers eliminated 18,000 jobs in March, before the mass of layoffs had really begun.

In the Sarasota-Manatee region, manufacturers employed 17,300 in February, up by 200 for the year. That is expected to decline when March data is released later this month.

Other large employers in the region that have shut down during the crisis include Feld Entertainment, which employs about 700 in Palmetto, and Chris Craft, the boat maker with 300 workers in south Manatee County.
