Syracuse factory with mysterious rooftop house for sale - New York Post

This house is through the roof.

A former carriage factory in Syracuse, NY, has hit the market for $1.6 million, according to the Post-Standard.

And a buyer will get something quirky on top — literally — of the factory of nearly 200,000 square feet: a two-story red house perched right on the roof.

The mysterious house, an unofficial Syracuse landmark, has been the subject of local lore for years. One legend claimed it belonged to a woman whose house was replaced by the factory, according to the paper. As part of that deal, the story goes, she had the home rebuilt on the roof so she could continue living there.

Another rumor is that it belonged to the owner of the factory, formerly the Penfield Manufacturing Company, so he could keep a very close eye on business.

But in a 1937 interview, the daughter of former factory owner Harvey Moyer claimed the house was a mere “architectural gimmick” meant to draw eyes to his carriage-making business.

No one has ever lived in the house. It’s now used as a structure to mask the motor that runs the building’s freight elevator.

The former factory — located directly across from the city’s sprawling Destiny USA shopping and entertainment complex — is being sold by the daughters of the late Yiorgos Kyriakopoulos, who purchased the site in 2012 for $200,000. He used the five-story building to store his collection of vintage cars and trucks, and planned to redevelop the space into loft-style homes and offices. But in 2017, he was killed in a traffic accident in Greece during a trip to attend his older brother’s funeral.

JF Real Estate, the firm representing the listing, is marketing it with the possibility of converting the facility into apartments and retail. Salesperson Martin McDermott says three developers have already expressed interest in turning the site into apartments.

That means the future of the red rooftop house is up to the new owner.

Could it be converted into a habitable roof-level abode? Well, it wouldn’t be the first time houses on top of buildings get turned into livable space.
