Tesla CEO Elon Musk has had an eventful 2020: Tesla stock surged 114 percent this year and hit a record of $939 per share; and President Trump called him a ‘genius’ after his company recovered from a scandal over Musk allegedly misleading investors and shareholders.
Early Wednesday morning, Musk took to Twitter to poll his followers with one tweet asking: “Giga Texas?”

Tech news outlets report that Musk is referring to whether or not he should open a Gigafactory in Texas in addition to current factories in China and Germany.
According to Electrek, the Shanghai factory has a current capacity of 150,000 vehicles per year as the company aims to expand its Model Y sedan-style vehicle into the Chinese market. In Germany, a factory outside of Berlin is slated to begin construction following approval from the Bradenburg parliament.
In the U.S., there are two Gigafactories in operation: one in Buffalo, N.Y., and in Storey County, Nev. — the latter being one of the biggest buildings in the world based on floor area and square footage. The factories tend to be named after their respective locations, called “Giga Nevada” and “Giga Shanghai.”
So when the CEO polled Twitter about the possibility of a Texas factory, 80.1 percent (an overwhelming majority) voted “Hell yeah,” of a total of 229,552 votes.
Musk appears to be feeling optimistic about his ventures considering astronomical share prices and record 2019 fourth quarter sales of 105,000 vehicles, with deliveries following suit at 112,000. In the same press release, the company states that, “We continue to focus on expanding production in both the US as well as our newly launched facility in Shanghai. Despite breaking ground at Gigafactory Shanghai less than 12 months ago, we have already produced just under 1,000 customer salable cars and have begun deliveries.”
Musk has recently tweeted about Tesla events in and relating to Texas, recently advertising job openings for “world-class chip designers to join our [Tesla’s] team, based in both Palo Alto & Austin” and attending a Starship Career Day in Boca Chica Blvd in Texas as a SpaceX career fair.
The poll will expire in 13 hours from time of this story's publication.
